Bishop Berg's statement on Sunday & Holy Day Obligation Restored

Updated: Dec 15, 2021

As the global health crisis of COVID-19 brought nearly all aspects of our life to a standstill, out of an over-abundance of care and concern for their flock, in March 2020 the bishops of Colorado's 3 dioceses granted a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Today, it is with great joy and renewed Easter hope that the bishops of Colorado have announced that the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days will be restored on Pentecost Sunday -- May 23, 2021.

Although the bishops are reinstating the Sunday and Holy Day obligation, there are specific situations of when you would remain dispensed. We have included a list that can be found in the joint statement from the Colorado bishops along with our FAQ Sheet.

As we prepare to welcome back many of our brothers and sisters who have been away from public worship and reception of the Eucharist, the risk of COVID-19 infection still remains a reality. Parishes, in consultation with their local public heath organizations, are asked to continue to take prudent steps to make sure that Masses are celebrated in a safe way.

For more information, a joint statement from the Colorado bishops and an FAQ Sheet is available below.

Remember, Mass is safe here...welcome home!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

+Most Reverend Stephen J. Berg

Bishop of Pueblo
